It's entirely normal.  276M is the "size" and includes memory addresses that
have been mapped for AGP and such-like, i.e. all of this memory is NOT
allocated from your RAM.  The actual resident size (RSS) is 7992K.

"Pretty sure" is apparently not good enough. :)  Your previous X
installation, if it made use of AGP, would have shown exactly the same
behaviour.
