I have no idea. I did some searches before posting, and didn't find
(stumble/trip) on an answer to this, so it might be a known issue. To
answer your implied question, yes, xfs is running. Is the font server of
all things responsible for hanging up X when in Xinerama mode? I presume
then, if this is the case, that looking up the docs to run it in
fontserver-less mode might fix the issue?
