You are probably using OFfb or a broken version of radeonfb (cat /proc/fb).
Either way, this is not an X server bug.

The best solution would of course be to get XFree86 4.2.0 or later and
use the radeon driver, either get it from testing/unstable or from a
woody 'backport' or see
