Package: XFree86
Version: 4.1.0.1-16

I have a Matrox Millennium MGA G400 AGP (rev 4) graphic card.
I configured XFree86 with debconf. When I try to start X I get the message
that the "mga_hal" module does not exist and the server crashes.
I am using Debian GNU/Linux Woody.

Here is /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to XFree86@XFree86.Org and patches submitted
to fixes@XFree86.Org. Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs)

Closing per hearsay testimony that the submitter says it's fixed.

Thanks for pursuing this issue, Prof. Funnell. The procedure you
followed was perfectly acceptable. In most circumstances, only the bug
submitter or the package maintainer should close a bug, but it is always
good to have help from people tracking things down and weighing in with
info that may convince one party or the other to close a bug. :)

In the future, please feel free to mail the bugnumber@bugs.debian.org
with information like this. Doing so decreases the chances that I will
lose track of such mails. Plus, if I get hit by a bus tomorrow, the
future maintainer of our XFree86 packages will have the information. :)

Thanks again.

Branden Robinson -

I noticed the xfree86 bug #150210 '"mga_hal" module does not exist'
because I had the same problem with the same graphics card. As you
noted in your response (2002 Jun 16) it doesn't really have anything
to do with the mga_hal module. The problem is solved by removing the
fbdev option.

In your response you asked for more information from the bug poster,
Max Moritz Sievers but he never replied. I wrote to him about it last
week to see whether he still had the problem. He answered that he is
now using 4.2.0, apparently with a newer graphics card. It would seem
that the bug could be closed now.

I hope you don't mind that I'm writing to you rather than to BTS. I'm
not sure what the correct procedure is.

Thanks for all your work on xfree86.

- Robert
