This isn't an X server problem but related to the current
libpng-and-whatnot transitions.

These don't ring a bell, can you put up screenshots somewhere?

http://penguinppc.org/~daenzer/hacks/r128-vgaHW.diff is a hack to work
around this; the radeon driver has another variation of this hack.
