yes, but the kernel has nothing to do with it, if you ask me. the way
i got it to work was to use 

Section "InputDevice"
  Identifier  "Configured Mouse"
  Driver    "mouse"
  Option    "CorePointer"
  Option    "Device"    "/dev/gpmdata"
  Option    "Protocol"    "PS/2"
  Option    "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
  Option    "ZAxisMapping"    "4 5"

in XF86Config-4 and then install the 'gpm' package, configured as so:

Device: /dev/psaux
Type: autops2
Repeat_Type: raw
