Problems with 4.0.1 servers now in unstable: crash on -configure, screenfreeze on start
Hi. Just had apt upgrade this machine to XFree 4.0.1, and a few
interesting but wrong things happened:
1) The server consistently crashes out when called with -configure,
whether manually of via the xf86cfg script.
2) If xdm is running, it starts X on boot and brings up the login, but
logging in as root drops back to the console and then respawns xdm.
3) If I log in as my normal username, the server will start, but as soon
as applications (in my afterstep autoexec) start to run, the screen
freezes. Magic SysRq keys will recover the console.
4) If run from the command line as root, with no automatically
starting applications, the standard gray screen comes up. The mouse can
move about and all. But when I tried to exit, the screen again froze and
magic SysRqs were required to get back to the console.
Enclosed is the full log file as requested; 2-4 may very well be the
result of an old 3.3.6 XF86Config file wreaking havoc on the 4.0.1
server. But point 1 definitely is a problem.
Sytem is a PII-350 running the unstable distribution; the video card is an
AGP Voodoo3 with 16M ram.
