This has been fixed upstream, is in the current pre-release versions (cf.
http://www.debian.org/~branden/), is expected to be in XFree86 3.3.6, and I
can apply this patch to a 3.3.5 .deb release if for some reason 3.3.6 is
delayed past our freeze.

This appears to be a bug in XF86Setup. I think it is unlinking its target
(/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config, which for us is a symlink to
/etc/X11/XF86Config) before writing to it. I need a Tcl person to help
analyze the code.

I think Keith Packard at XFree86 is looking into this. The good news is
that he has fixed some bugs in xfs itself that make it less likely to
crash...
1541. Fix font server to not crash on bogus requests (#3449, Keith Packard).
so this should reduce the occurrences of the X server crashing.
If someone is brave enough to go hacking DIX, though, they should feel
free. IMO this is not release-critical, we've been living with it for
years.

I need to report this upstream. It's a bug internal to the X server.
Anyone brave enough to help hack on it is welcome to...

This might be addressed by
1508. Fix ViRGE/MX and APM (#3345, Harald Koenig).
in the forthcoming 3.3.6 release. I reported this upstream in September
and Loic Grenie of XFree86 said he would look into it, but I haven't heard
any more about it. It might be worthwhile to try the 3.3.6 pre-release
packages; see <http://www.debian.org/~branden/>.

I think the problem is that this person is not using xserver-fbdev with
fbcon.

An strace on this would be helpful.

I need the output from the X server on this bug.
X -probeonly > server-ouput 2>&1
should take care of it if he doesn't want to start X again and lock his
machine.
