Bug#614233: www.debian.org: Debian = "Debian GNU/Linux" + "Debian GNU/kFreeBSD"
Package: www.debian.org
Severity: normal
For our opening page www.debian.org, I think we have too much emphasis
on "GNU/Linux". Let's see:
| Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating
| system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your
| computer run. Debian uses the Linux kernel (the core of an operating
| system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU project; hence
| the name GNU/Linux.
Since we have "Debian GNU/kFreeBSD", it should be written something
along following options.
Option 1:
| Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An operating
| system is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your
| computer run. Debian uses the Linux or FreeBSD kernel (the core of an
| operating system), but most of the basic OS tools come from the GNU
| project; hence the name Debian GNU/Linux or Debian GNU/kFreeBSD.
or with a shorter text (use OS and drop reference to Linux etc.).
Option2:
| Debian is a free operating system (OS) for your computer. An OS
| is the set of basic programs and utilities that make your computer
| run. Debian uses the DFSG compliant Free kernel (the core of an
| OS) and the DFSG compliant Free OS tools.
(Make sure to put link to DFSG.) This option 2 can handle future
situation such as HURD.
The next sentence:
| Debian GNU/Linux provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over
| 29000 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for
| easy installation on your machine.
This can be started as
| Debian provides more than a pure OS: it comes with over
| 29000 packages, precompiled software bundled up in a nice format for
| easy installation on your machine.
Then the http://www.debian.org/intro/about can elaborate:
| WHAT is Debian?
|
| The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common
| cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we
| have created is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short.
This can be changed as:
| WHAT is Debian?
|
| The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common
| cause to create a free operating system. This operating system that we
| have created is called Debian.
|
| Debian is sometimes called "Debian GNU/Linux" and "Debian
| GNU/kFreeBSD" identifying the basic utility tools and system kernel
| used.
The English text proposed is just to indicate issues to be addressed.
Please propose better text.
