The SWITCH Foundation has operated the Swiss Education & Research
Network since 1987, guaranteeing the universities access to the
information society. This high-performance network connects users in
Switzerland with users all over the world. Operating this network
provides SWITCH with the necessary know-how and technological
foundation for running the registry for domain names ending in .ch
and .li.
We have a variety of Linux distributions in use as server operating
systems - with Debian currently running on 140 servers. We not only
appreciate the stability and speed of the Debian OS, but also the
efficient and smooth packet administration as well as the quickly
available security updates. Distribution upgrades are easy to
install. SWITCH will thus continue to use Debian as default Linux
distribution and will recommend it to it's service operators.

Die Stiftung SWITCH betreibt seit 1987 das Schweizer
Wissenschaftsnetz, das den Hochschulen den Zugang zur
Informationsgesellschaft garantiert. Das Hochleistungs-Netzwerk
verbindet Benutzer in der Schweiz und weltweit. Der Betrieb dieses
Netzwerkes liefert uns das notwendige Know-how und bildet die
technologische Basis für den Betrieb der Registrierungsstelle für
Domain-Namen unter .ch und .li.
Als Server-Betriebssystem verwenden wir neben Solaris und Mac OS
X diverse Linux-Distributionen - auf 140 Server läuft Debian als
Betriebssystem. Neben der hohen Stabilität schätzen wir die
Geschwindigkeit, die effiziente und saubere Paketverwaltung, sowie
die rasch verfügbaren Security-Updates. Sehr gute Erfahrungen haben
wir zudem mit den nahezu reibungslosen Distributions-Upgrades
gemacht. Wir werden deshalb Debian weiterhin als
Default-Linux-Distribution verwenden und auch unseren
Service-Betreibern empfehlen.
