OTTOMH - "easier to search", "better search results as most searching 
tools search on a line by line basis"

I'm guessing that the intention of that phrase is to point out that
reading the output of egrep on a document with no "new lines" is just 
the same as  "cat doc-with-no-CR" :)

Maybe it would be better to just ask them to set the "text width" or
"line wrap" variable to a sane value, e.g. 72 is a good choice.
