That's new to me. For example in the Debconf templates, the agreement
(on debian-l10n-english!) was for using only one space. And as long as
I remember (but I might remember wrong) the standard was on one whitespace
in the English version. But anyhow, this should be consistent, the current
DPN uses both conventions (i.e. single and double spaces), I don't mind
which one is used.

I always fix non-english translations as well, so no need to remind me
(but I understand this, e.g. the recent DPN template switch was left
as an exercise to the translators while it did not contain any local
specific change).

But if you say so, I'll refrain from fixing the English version.
Previously I assumed this was ok, as long as translations are fixed at
the same time (which I'll do). And I also assumed that consistent and
proper layout was desired in English as well, but I might be wrong on
that.

At least for DWN there used to be a QA for spelling, tags, layout etc,
so if translators are frown from fixing those issues while noting them
in their translation, I strongly suggest getting a good QA for the
English version in place which will fix those issue instead. I'tt be a
pitty if the English version will become the least "maintained".[1]

Greetings

improved (e.g. better terms are found) or formatting errors are
    spotted (e.g. switching " -> <q>, -- -> &ndash;)
