Ok.

For me the difference is that with a CDD you install the CDD rather
than Debian, so you switch your _primary_ source of packages. Even if
99.9% of these packages are identical to the ones in the Debian archive,
you still trust the makers of the CDD to decide about which will not be.
(because otherwise what would be the reason to use the CDD in the first
place?)

If you use backports.org and volatile, your primary source is still
Debian. Plus they don't really customize software, or add new packages.
They mostly just recompile them.

I will not deny that there is also a very practical reason here. I
have to draw a line somewhere (unless someone is willing to pimp up
packages.debian.org to become launchpad ;). And keeping all CDDs out will
be a lot easier than keeping some of them out and some not.
