Hello, I've written a message to press@debian.org and was redirected bye Joey to you. I'm writing on behalf of FFII, the Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (http://www.ffii.org). In Europe a version of a Software Patent directive is on the verge of being passed, although it does not hold a qualified majority in the European Parliament. Many parliaments of European governments have voiced their opinion against it. But instead of restarting the discussion, the Commission wants to push this version of the directive through. They use tactics which should not be used in a democratic system, viz. they try putting the directive up for the Agriculture and Fishery Council Meeting on the coming Monday (Jan. 24.) in the last minute (Jan. 19). Their hope is that it will be nodded through without further discussion because of the lack of knowledge in this area from the Agriculture and Fishery Council members. There is a webdemo under way whose goal it is to attract the attention of the members of the Agriculture and Fishery Council and to spread the word to people all around, so that they can help to achieve this goal. The webdemo's site can be found at http://demo.ffii.org/cons0501/support.php. Debian has a big following of users and developers worldwide. It would be great if you could help us by either replacing the debian.org (or some of the european mirrors) front page with a protest page or use a banner in a prominent spot. I'm sure you can relate to our concerns regarding software patents. Thank you very much for taking some time Sincerely, Nico Fritschi -- Nico Fritschi Tel.: (06151) 3916760 Havelstrasse 22 Mobil: (0179) 6723902 64295 Darmstadt E-Mail: nico-fritschi@gmx.de Find my gpg key at: keyserver.net
