Hmm, this rather depends on your definition of "compatible". Any OS that
supports 8-bit ASCII is also compatible with UTF-8. Also, the portions
that are used for English (the 7-bit characters) are shared between the
8-bit encodings.
So unless you're specifically trying to encode non-English text inside
your English documents, UTF-8 should be OK.
