Lyc=E9e Moli=E8re, Belgium.
http://www.lycee-moliere.org

Being a private school, the Lyc=E9e Moli=E8re does not benefit from all the
State sponsored grants public schools would normaly do.Offering to pupils t=
he same quality of teaching as in other schools is
therefore sometimes a major challenge. When it came to provide the common in=
ternet services to the school, the
GNU/Linux solution became obvious to us.Our network is made of +/- 30 Macin=
tosh Imacs (still running MacOS, for
the moment at least !) on the workstation side, and of 1 mail server
(exim, cyrus-IMAPd and squirrelMail), one web server (apache), one DNS
server (bind9), one file server (netatalk) and one proxy server (Squid +
squidGuard), on the server side.As the school is noway in the position to h=
ire a full-time IT admin, all
those machines have to be as stable and secure as possible and what other
distribution would do that better than Debian ?

Hi,

I'm from news-service.com and i'm writing you this email out of personal
interrest. I think we make fairly good use of Debian, and we would like to
be listed on the who's using debian page. Currently i put the name Debian
all over our website to help get some more attention to Debian in general.

News-Service.com, Netherlands
Commercial Organization
url: http://www.news-service.com

We maintain a high traffic server farm of news servers. Currently we have
over 10 different servers of which some easily process over 150mbps (250
at peak times). In total all servers process hundreds of mbps and millions
of articles a day. Our servers are in the top 150 of the top 1000 usenet
sites in the world. We choose more and more Debian over FreeBSD because
Debian is easy to install, maintain and support. Best of all, Debian is
rock solid stable. Getting 99.99+% uptime a month is no exception.

News-Service.com is part of a bigger access and hosting company. Most
hosting and e-mail servers are running Debian and even most of the Support
staff is running Debian on their desktops. Getting from a BSDI and FreeBSD
background, Debian is a real enlightenment in terms of maintainability.

Kind Regards,
Tommy van Leeuwen

I'm new user of Debian. I use r3.0 woody, XWindow System, IceWM,=20
Mozilla 1.2.1 browser, OpenOffice 1.0.1, xmms, EClipt roaster.
My hobby is studio works with sound, but this I cannot do with Linux=20
since now because of really useless software for sound editing that=20
comes with distribution. However, I'm trying to use Debian at least for=20
browsing, CD-burning and for office because of its stability and security.
I must say Mandrake 9.0 has better hardware auto-setting and=20
auto-detecting system and modules auto-installing, because without=20
compilling new kernel, after installation there works fine CDRW,=20
soundcard, graphical card etc without any special heavy efforts. In=20
Debian I must compile the kernel to achieve basic functionality of=20
soundcard and CDRW.
I have permanent problems with diacritics (setting ISO8859-2 fonts in=20
Icepref doesn't help to display application title in window header=20
correctly), keyboard (since now I haven't solved switching between US=20
and SK-QWERTY keyboards, I'll be working on it but it all takes lot of=20
time and I must solve more difficult problems before) and I'd really=20
like some automated package for font anti-aliasing in IceWM.

I suggest You to add "KERNEL DEVELOPEMENT" choice to Tasksel, because=20
after new installation, on some computer 'make xconfig' works for me, on=20
some not. I really don't know, where the problem is. "wish -command not=20
found" or something like that. I have installed all libs mentioned in=20
Kernel-howto, but maybe something was missing even, because after=20
installing couple of unrelated packages and thus their libraries too, it=20
started to work.
I must say that I like Debian very much. It lacks in ease of set up=20
against Mandrake, however. When I was really tired and hopeless, I=20
installed Mandrake, and everything is working fine and immediately there.

Thank You for Your great work, keep doing. I feel that Debian is=20
developing in good way, but "It still isn't there". I will continue to=20
use Debian, I like it very much, but if I want something to work and=20
really have no more time or energy to fight and make it running under=20
Debian, I still have to escape to Mandrake.

Have a nice day
Mgr.Peter Tuharsky

I have used Debian for years, I have tried all other flavors of Linux
but none compare to the robustness and ease of use that debian has
produced from the day I started using it. We use it on all 3 servers
here and it is also implemented in our Virtual Server platform and each
customer has Debian running as a Virtual Server.

4) How we use debian:
We use Debian Linux as a choice for fast stable servers and workstations.
Currently, our in-house DHCP, Intranet, NAT, NIS, and even NT Domain
Authentication servers all run Debian. Several of our employees use
Debian on the desktop, and we are currently migrating towards diskless
workstations for many of our employees, again, based on Debian, talking to
a Debian TFTP host.

Debian is great, flexible, secure and stable. Also the LinEx version, which

Hi there,

we are using Debian !

Organization: Computer Lab, University of Regensburg, Germany (and all=20
faculties !)
Org. type: educational
homepage: http://www.uni-regensburg.de/EDV/Unix_Workstations/Linux/=20
(only German so far, sorry)

We are running 200 Linux-PCs distributed all around the university=20
(number constantly growing !), a Linux compute cluster, two=20
student-pools and several servers with Debian woody. Apart from the=20
servers, all computers are integrated in the NIS+ domain and get their=20
home-directories via NFS from a central SUN E450. They get updated via=20
apt-get whereby all packages are adapted to the local circumstances=20
beforehand, so that the users in the faculties do not have to do any=20
system-administration. The most important dates of the clients are=20
stored in a central mySQL-database, which is connected during the=20
installation and everydays administration processes. Debian was mainly=20
chosen for its ease of administration and software updates. It's=20
well-tested release policy reduces the amount of updates and guarantees=20
stability. Furthermore lots of free documentation is available which=20
allows insights in the technical details of the system.

Thank you for adding us,

best regards from Regensburg (Bavaria),

Christoph

P.S. Would you please proofread the few sentences as I could not find a=20
native-speaker to do so... :-)) ?=20
