Me either.  However, I can think of no good reason* not to generate all
images in both GIF and PNG format: or even better, GIF, JPG and PNG.
Content negotiation is already required to be enabled on Debian web
sites, so an inline image can be requested as:

  <img src="http://www.debian.org/foo"; />

... and depending on what the requesting browser can support, they'll
get served up foo.png, foo.jpg or foo.gif.  This is how the w3.org site
has been doing the "Valid HTML!" images for some time now.  eg:

  http://www.w3.org/Icons/valid-html401

If you look in /Icons/ you'll see that all the image files are available
in at least two different formats.
