packages.debian.org
hi folks,
i read in your todo list that you are unsatisfied with the current
packages list, and so am i. i personally find the i386-centric view
especially annoying, since debian is one of the very few dists that
supports such a wide range of machines.
i don't know what the status on this is, but if there is anything i can
do, i'm willing to spend some time on this.
i also read the suggestions in the todo list, and i have some comments:
- i also think that these pages should be generated dynamically, since
it's such an awfull lot
- i think the speed issues can easily be sorted out with a proper
caching in the cgi (store generated pages)
- i think that merging all the packages.gz files (and the sources.gz?)
should contain all the required data, but this should not be done in a
flat file, but in a dbms with a bit more structure, so that
- you don't invalidate the whole data when one of the package files
changes
- you can search by various fields
- you can crossreference the packages
- you normalise your data
- if you do this properly, only very little unnecessary work would be
done on each dbms update, so you could do that fairly often
regards
robert
