 It's working perfect here:

alfie@asgard:~/work/Debian/CVS/webwml/german/y2k$ make
touch ../../english/template/debian/common_tags.wml
touch ../../english/template/debian/navbar.wml
touch ../../english/template/debian/basic.wml
cd ../../english/template/debian && sed -e '/^#/d' -e '/^<perl>/,/^<\/perl>/!d' language_names.wml  | eperl -B '<perl>' -E '</perl>' - >/dev/null
touch ../../english/template/debian/languages.wml
touch ../../english/template/debian/template.wml
wml -q -D CUR_YEAR=2002 -o UNDEFuDE:extra.de.html@g+w   extra.wml
wml -q -D CUR_YEAR=2002 -o UNDEFuDE:index.de.html@g+w   index.wml

 What is your $SHELL? Don't think that the file uses bashism or anything
special anywhere but worth a try... You have {german,english}/y2k/*
checked out and up to date?

 Did you look at the output of wml -p1-5 and checked that for where the
failure might be?

 HTH,
Alfie
