Re: Apropos of spam..

An interesting historical note: knitting was once (in Medieval
England/Europe) a guild-controlled art forbidden to women. The skill
was used primarily to make expensive stockings. However, a clever
woman figured out how it was done and taught her friends, subverting
the guild's exclusionary tactics. This led to knitting becoming a
cottage industry instead of a guild-based art, and then (possibly
because of the abundance of supply), the price of knitted goods was
depressed to the point that ONLY women who had few other means of
earning money (and may have had a husband/father/brother to support
them) while raising children could afford to make them.
