From my (limited, US centric) experience, degrees are pretty much how
you get past initial HR screening; no one actually pays much attention
to it when you actually get to interview stages or the experienced
based portion of hiring.
What's far more important is documented experience in whatever field
you're applying for jobs; publicly available code and name recognition
is extremely useful too.
[In academia, it's even stranger, because it's entirely experience
based; everyone has a PhD in something from somewhere accredited.
Where, what, and how much you've published is what matters.]
