There are already several tools that do this in Debian.

Given the description, it looks like a frontend to dd, and it explicitly 
mentions that it offers a subset of the functionality of GNOME Disks. Do 
we need this?

Will it also list Debian as 'GOOD_DISTROS' [1]?
