Are you interested to become a Debian Maintainer or Developper?If you post your proposed changes here, then I'll have a look at them and hopefull push them to Debian.
Ultimately I think it'd make more sense to maintan the package on samba. That way it'd be easier to propose changes, pull requests etc.
