The push worked, but there's no debian/ directory in there.

Also, the .git directory will never appear "inside" the git repo so
you can't see it in the gitlab UI. But effectively, you are only
pushing the .git/ contents to the server which will extract all the
working files from there.

I suggest you get it to compile first, without any debianization.
Upstream should hopefully be interesting in shipping code that
compiles.
