I have just converted my recent NMU into a series of git commits and pushed it to the repository on Salsa. Hopefully that will be a useful basis for you to continue work from. It might make sense to start merging from the upstream git repository in future. Bug ##966515 still affects stretch and buster. For buster, I've pushed changes to fix it to a new 'buster' branch.
