At this point the package is a candidate for salvaging.  Davide, are you
aware of this?

Good to hear, I guess he isn't complete MIA :-) Davide, please reply to
bugs, because it looks like you don't care about Auctex anymore.

The best case would be for Davide to resume maintenance of this
package.  Failing that it can be salvaged.

Itaï, please note that because none of the bugs are release critical
(RC), the objective is not to NMU (non maintainer upload) to fix bugs,
nor to package the latest upstream version; it is for the package to be
well-maintained.  Have you read all the new contributor documentation,
and is your intent to contribute to Auctex long-term?
