The package-update-indicator utility regularly checks for software
updates and notifies the user about available updates using desktop
notifications and either a status notifier icon or a system tray
icon.

This is a much-improved replacement for the pk-update-icon package
which is no longer under development and depends on an obsolete
software stack (see
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=885812 ).
