It turns out empty-epsilon does not actually use the Sansation font - at least grepping through the source returns no references to it and it runs fine without it. I will raise the issue of the non-free models with the empty-epsilon developers and see if they can find/develop free alternatives. I am not a 3D modeller, so I do not know how much work that would take...
