If you want to overhaul the package, there was some work on debhelper
integration done a little time ago.
Maybe take a look at dh_aspell-simple in dictionareis-common; aspell-it
was a model package for that, you should be able to "steal" the
relevant pieces from there. In doubt, ping me; I was involved in the
update of aspell-it
