Bug#825069: RFP: terminix -- Tiling terminal emulator using GTK+ 3 and VTE

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Version: 1.0.0 (as tagged in git) or newer from the 'stable' branch
(see https://github.com/gnunn1/terminix/issues/25)
URL: https://github.com/gnunn1/terminix
License: MPL

Terminix is a tiling terminal emulator.

It is more or less similar to Terminator (which is already shipped by Debian).

Unlike Terminator, which still uses Gtk+-2 and its matching ancient
buggy and unmaintained libvte9 for terminal emulation, Terminix is
based on the newest Gtk+-3 and libvte-2.91. Terminator as a project is
also pretty much abandoned, whereas Terminix is actively being
maintained. After significant amount of development and
testing-bugfixing, version 1.0.0 has just recently been tagged in git.

It has a decent UI, a neatly organized prefs window, and cool features
such as a session sidebar. It is also, according to my best knowledge,
the first libvte-2.91 based terminal emulator that brings back the
popular feature of background image (which is no longer explicitly
supported by libvte-2.91, but could be hacked around by placing an
image behind a transparent vte widget). (This was committed shortly
after 1.0.0.)

I believe Terminix is a great replacement for Terminator, an actively
maintained project providing a nicer user interface, better overall
experience, and most importantly, a significantly newer and better
behavior for the actual terminal emulation.

Thanks,
egmont
