Perhaps.  It's worth doing a search of existing FLOSS projects and see if
there are existing projects that could reasonably collide.  If not, I don't
think it's necessary to future proof your source package name for whatever may
come down the pike some day.  Even if there are potential collisions, it's
worth trying to make some determination as to whether those other packages
have a reasonable expectation of entering Debian any time soon.

Or put another way, what is "too generic" and who gets to decide?
