It has a different design concept, it is more close to IRSSI, whereas
mcabber has a more its design. I do not know how mcabber is developed
but profanity's upstream is great. James Booth is very active and
helpful in every aspect, add good features and the code is superb. 

I know this does not sound like very "different" from mcabber I feel
that profanity will find many users in Debian. 

There is also ekg2 in Debian for jabber, irc and gg networks.
