Bug#736099: RFP: global6 - new generation of GNU GLOBAL

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name            : global6
  Version                       : 6.2.10
  Upstream authoer : Shigio YAMAGUCHI <shigio@gnu.org>
* URL                           : http://www.gnu.org/software/global/
* License : GPL either version 3, or (at your
option) any later version
  Programming language: C
  Description : Version 6 of GNU GLOBAL, a source code
tag system that works the
                                     same way across diverse environments

GNU GLOBAL is a very excellent and mature source code tag system. It
supports various development environment, such as command line, Emacs,
VI, web broswer etc. It also has a cscope compatible interface. In
addition, its capability can be extended by using GNU ID Utils and
Exuberant CTAGS.

GNU GLOBAL had been packaged and maintained by Ron Lee
<ron@debian.org> until version 5.7.1. Since then, due to some
disagreement between the upstream and Debian maintainer, GNU GLOBAL's
Debian packages no longer updates and incompatible changes, such as
htmake, are introduced into the Debian packages. Please see
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=574947 for details.

By contrast, the development of the upstream of GNU GLOBAL is still
very active. The latest version is 6.2.10 which has many significant
improvements and bug fixes compared with 5.7.1. It would be very
great if Debian can have packages of the new generation (version 6) of
GNU GLOBAL. The Ubuntu users can leverage as well. By having both
original global and the proposed global6 packages in Debian
simultaneously, we can resolve the issue reported by bug #574947.

I have packaged the new versions of GNU GLOBAL by myself. I can
upload the related files to Debian mentor if needed.

Thanks,
Hongzheng
