Most people have abandoned libav (like me) because of all the new development in ffmpeg. I build my own libx264 + ffmpeg every night. I've only had trouble with libav, either it does not support what I'm trying do to, creates poor quality output or runs 30-50% longer than ffmpeg (shown by time) for the exact same transcodes.
