Originating as a fork of the Ruby project Diaspora, by now Diaspora x² is completely rewritten, with user-facing parts reimplemented in JavaScript and backend replaced with hooks into open standards-based XMPP federated Activity Streams and Channels. . Unlike other major social networking projects, e.g. AppleSeed and Elgg, Diaspora x² use XMPP as backend. And unlike OnesocialWeb, another project using XMPP, the needed extensions are rather lightweight so should be easier to implement and deploy for more XMPP servers.
