The problem is solved by a patch from the upstream repository
(http://petsc.cs.iit.edu/petsc4py/petsc4py-dev/rev/300045797445, See
also http://code.google.com/p/petsc4py/issues/detail?id=14)

You can find an updated (1.0.2) and fixed package at
http://chris.logweb.net/debian/petsc4py

It's working fine for me now, though it still displays two warning
messages at startup:

In [1]: from petsc4py import PETSc
[faepop13:04200] mca: base: components_open: component timer / linux
open function failed
[faepop13:04201] mca: base: components_open: component timer / linux
open function failed

Do you have any special requirements apart from Debian one's for new
members? I would really love to contribute to the Debian project an
since it gave me the perfect operating system for free ;)
