 rocklight is an xmms visualization plugin and a standalone stroboscope
 which makes use of the Thinklight on IBM Thinkpads. It requires the
 ibm-acpi kernel module and correct permissions in /proc/ibm/acpi/light.

Work has already begun in [1]. I'm also a user of rocklight (Thinkpad
T23 owner) and I'm able to do upstream if needed, as well as an XMMS
co-maintainer. Thank you very much for your time, WNPP-people.
