Bug#314709: ITP: tclkit -- runtime for .kit Tcl applications (Starkits)

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Massimo Dal Zotto <dz@debian.org>

* Package name    : tclkit
  Version : 200412.003 (?)

Description : runtime for .kit Tcl applications (Starkits)

Tclkit is a compact, single file executable containing a complete scripting
runtime, including a rich scripting language (Tcl), a high-level GUI toolkit
(Tk), a powerful object system (IncrTcl), the Tcl Virtual File System
(TclVFS), and an embedded high-performance database (Metakit).

The Debian version of Tclkit includes also support for threads and the TclX
library extension.

The tclkit interpreter is used to run Tcl applications distributed in .kit
format (Starkits). A Starkit is a wrapping mechanism for delivering a Tcl
application in a self-contained, installation-free, and portable way.
A Starpack is a special version of Starkit which combines a Starkit with
a Tclkit runtime into a single stand-alone executable file.

This package includes also the sdx.kit utility which can be used to operate
on Starkits and two simple scripts for generating Starkits and Starpacks.

Since Debian already provides regular packages for Tcl/Tk this package is
not required to run Tcl programs. However there are some cases in which you
may want to install tclkit:

  - running binary Starkits downloaded from the Internet

  - wrappping a Tcl/Tk application into a single stand-alone binary
or executable for distribution on systems where Tcl/Tk may not
    be available

  - wrapping a Tcl/Tk application which requires tclthreads or TclX

A preliminary version of the debian tclkit package can be found at:
