* Package name    : madwifi
  Version         : 20030702
  Upstream Author : Sam Leffler <samleffler@users.sourceforge.net>

* License : BSD or GPLv2[1] with some unmodifiable binary parts[2]
  Description : Binary Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi

A Linux device driver for 802.11a/b/g Wireless NIC cards - either Cardbus, PCI, or miniPCI - that use Atheros chip sets (ar5210, ar5211, ar5212). Currently the binary-only HAL part of the module is only available on x86.

[1] Licence is 3 point BSD with the following addition:

* Alternatively, this software may be distributed under the terms of the
* GNU General Public License ("GPL") version 2 as published by the Free
* Software Foundation.

Unfortunatly, since it doesn't explictly allow linking to nonfree code,
We really cant distribute with GPL terms. I assume this is just an
oversight and will contact the author. Obvously, this will be nonfree
anyway :(

[2] Atheros has a little better excuse to provide nonfree kernel stuff
than for example nvidia:

> The ath_hal module contains the Atheros Hardware Access Layer (HAL).
> This code manages much of the chip-specific operation of the driver.
> The HAL is provided in a binary-only form in order to comply with FCC
> regulations. In particular, a radio transmitter can only be operated at
> power levels and on frequency channels for which it is approved. The FCC
> requires that a software-defined radio cannot be configured by a user
> to operate outside the approved power levels and frequency channels.
> This makes it difficult to open-source code that enforces limits on
> the power levels, frequency channels and other parameters of the radio
> transmitter.  See

> http://ftp.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Engineering_Technology/Orders/2001/fcc01264.pdf

Basicly FCC says, that manufacturers of software radios have take
measures to prevent the software to be modified in such ways that it
will operate outside the approved range.

This is offcourse a tough problem, regulation is necessary evil in
the limited spectrum, but without the flexibility of software radio,
creating multimode/multiband devices is a lot more expensive.
To make things worse, FCC is in the process of creating standards for
signing/encrypting radio software. Time to start lobbying FCC?
