Hi Gregor, my name is Fabio Tranchitella. Even if I'm not yet a DD (but I'm actually in nm.debian.org, and I already have a package in debian) I'm interested in adopting python-mysqldb. I often use it for work, so I'd like to help this package to be good maintained. Also, upstream released 1.0 version, so I think it should be packaged soon. About the license problem, I think there are no exit ways. The only Good Thing(tm) we can do is to build two packages as you suggested, with some meta-packages for the transition. Have you already talked about this problem on debian-devel or on debian-python? Maybe I missed it...
