Did you try the lmodern package? The Latin Modern fonts are "enhanced"
(with accented characters and more) Computer Modern fonts in Type 1
format. As far as French typesetting is concerned, they are similar to
cm-super but it seems they are of better quality (I say "seems" because
I am not myself a font expert).

Perhaps they could solve the problem for you and your friends.


PS: the lmodern version in unstable (0.86-9) has X and defoma support
    for the fonts; for TeX-related work only, the version in testing
    (0.86-7) should be equivalent.
