I wonder this provides that procmail does not - except, perhaps, for a
syntax that does not resemble line noise?

Hm, qmail is non-free. Does main contain any MTA whose local delivery
concept allows this sort of chaining? (It also seems to be rather
inefficient in terms of process creations).
