Phorus is a GPLed game similar to Zone66. Zone66 was an old Epic game
in which the player "flew" a plane through a 2D world, shooting down other
planes and bombing strategic targets. It was more fun than it sounds :)

Phorus is currently alpha, but the test levels are playable [0], and the
author has big plans (networking, team play, lots of cool extensions, etc)
Moreover, he appears to either have graphical abilities, or have friends
that do. Or maybe playing free games so much has lowered my standards
for graphics :) Anyway, it's pretty compared to many other games out there,
and will presumably become prettier as time goes on. (unless it does
something like Freeciv did in 1.12..)

The author has asked me to wait until 0.2 before releasing debs, as he
wants to implement the major portions of the game engine before releasing it
to a wide audience via binary distribution.

  Web page is http://phorus.sandwich.net .

Note: the current release of the datafiles has no clear license. I've
spoken with the author, and he already wants to have a DFSG-free data set
before he releases 0.2, and is going to do the necessary work. (probably,
from what he said, it's mostly just a matter of getting permission from
the people who contributed artwork to release it under some free license)

  Daniel

[0] at least they were until a recent snapshot broke them completely.

As far as I can tell, upstream has abandoned this project before
producing something usable.
