I don't know what you were planning on doing with the events generated by miid, but I wonder if you would consider providing some sort of event.d directory like apmd does, perhaps using run-parts to call each script with two parameters: up|down and <interface>. The motivation for this, is to allow programs such as whereami to drop a script in the directory which would automatically trigger location detection and machine reconfiguration when the cable was plugged in or unplugged.
