Bug#138225: iODBC libraries in Debian

Sorry, but I am being introduced to this in the middle, what is the
problem?

Err, it has been available for maybe three years. I used to build it against
iODBC (as we had no working unixodbc back then) and switched from
iODBC to unixODBC when upstream did about two minor releases ago
(0.38, circa March; we're now at 0.40)
 
Any problems with that at your end, Stephen?
