[VUA 45-1] Discontinuing clamav-data support for "plain" etch

Subject : Discontinuing clamav-data support for "plain" etch
Package : clamav-data

The clamav-data packages from volatile will be tested only for clamav
in etch-volatile and upwards, but not for clamav in etch any more.

Clamav 0.90.1 from Debian etch has issues with current databases: The
new signature types introduced a while ago cause the signature parser
to be pathologically slow. As a result, a test of the signatures
against clamav 0.90.1 takes more than ten minutes. Clamav 0.92 from
etch-volatile, lenny and sid does the same job in about ten seconds.

Currently, the clamav-data packages that are generated and uploaded
to etch-volatile automatically get built on etch, and are tested on
etch, etch-volatile, lenny and sid. The build process and the test on
etch are responsible for more than 90 % of the average run time.

This is a burden which is no longer acceptable for the build
infrastructure as clamav currently releases more than ten new database
versions on average daily. We are currently missing some releases
since the previous database has not been completely built when the
next is released.

Therefore, starting April 1, 2008, the Debian Volatile project is
going to discontinue clamav-data support for plain etch. The
clamav-data packages will, starting this day, be built on
etch-volatile and only be tested on etch-volatile, lenny and sid. The
resulting packages are likely to be useable on plain etch, but this
will not be part of the automatic testing process any more.

We therefore encourage people still using the clamav engine from etch
to upgrade to etch-volatile at the earliest convenience.
