How to find .desktop file associated with mate panel launcher

The subject says it all.  How do I find the .desktop file that is associated with a particular launcher icon on a mate panel?

I have been googling since yesterday and I have not found an answer.  I have been told that the files are in:

  • System-wide apps: /usr/share/applications/
  • User-installed apps: ~/.local/share/applications/

  • and there certainly are .desktop files in these locations.  The first has quite a few such files, a few of which are for programs that I have launchers for.  Most are not.  The second has only a few files, none of which match up with launchers on the panel in question.

I also have .desktop files in ~/.config/mate/panel2.d/default/launchers, which would appear to match the launchers on the panel, except that two of them are missing (these are available in /usr/share/applications/.  So, some are in /usr/share/applications/, some are in ~/.local/share/applications/, and some are in both.  How do I determine which file a launcher icon is actually attached to?
