There's often a 'diagnostic' page which usually just has ping, but may

A live CD is probably the quickest option here. If you have to download
it, go for the last Knoppix available, which is 2021 but if the laptop
is at least that old, should be fine. It's a tweaked Debian sid
optimised for testing purposes.
