The ordinary upgrade will not remove packages without warning you and
allowing you to abort. A Debian version upgrade requires removing
packages and replacing them with packages with a different name, which
the ordinary upgrade command will not do.

Sometimes in the unstable and testing versions it is necessary to use
dist-upgrade (or full-upgrade) for the same reason. It should not
generally be necessary to use it in the stable version.
