It's not necessarily a bad idea; if you have, for example, a
large pile of disks where full SATA speed access is overkill, a
port multiplier can be a reasonable access method.

SATA3 is 600MB/s, and a typical rotating disk maxes out at
150MB/s or 250MB/s (on the newest). So 2:1 is reasonable, and
4:1 can be reasonable, depending.

The particular problem that you will likely have, though, is
that the ASM1061 is not very good, and there are lots of reports
of problems plugging them into port multipliers.

If you can swap it out to another PCIe based disk controller,
you'll be in luck... but if you can do that, you might want an
LSI 300X PCIe controller, which can do SAS and SATA and
frequently comes in 8 and 16 port variants, thus no longer
requiring a port multiplier in many scenarios.
